How does a drip irrigation system work?

Water is carried around the system by a black supply tube.  The supply tube usually has an internal diameter (ID) of 13mm and an outer diameter (OD)of 16mm.

The Supply Tube comes in 10, 25, 50 and 100m coils which you cut to appropriate lengths and join using barbed connectors, 13mm size.  These connectors come in a variety of styles which enable you to route the supply tube around the area to be watered. You can bury this tube up to 5cm underground, or hide it under a mulch or greenery.

The number fittings attached to the tube will determine the length that can be run of a single tap but a 50mtr run is normally OK.

If you need to two or more runs then these can be automated using a multi port timer, this allows for each of the different runs to be controlled independently. This means that you might want to water your flower bed 5 minutes and your vegetable plot for 10 minutes. The Claber Duplo is a dual port timer, while the Orbit Yard timer is a dual port timer that can be upgraded to support 3 or 4 ports in total.

How Do I get the Water To The Plants

Using micro tubing inserted into the main supply tube, this carries water from the supply tube to the plants.   This tubing has an ID of 4mm and an OD of 6mm.  Use 4mm barbed fittings to connect lengths of micro tube together.

You add a water outlet to the end of the micro tube, to deliver the water directly to your plants.


Micro Jets

For complete coverage of flowerbeds and borders. Spray covers up to 60cm. Jet spike and rigid riser lift micro jet above plants.
Microjet on riser and stake - up to 35cms high. Use as microjet's. Adjust flow to suit area.



Micro Misters

Light upright spray, ideal for delicate plants and seedlings or anywhere that needs a mist. These are perfect for watering vegetables that have just flowered before producing fruit, as well as in cloche or greenhouse.



Mini Sprinklers

These can have a fixed or adjustable flow and can have a maximum coverage of 6m. Overlap to avoid dry patches. These are ideal for covering large planted areas as well as vegetable patches.




This should be placed at the base of small plants. Keep separate from micro-jets and mini-sprinklers. Amongst groups of small plants and at the roots of larger ones. Inverted above hanging baskets . Use tube stake to support above soil.




Easy Installation

Most connections are push-fits, so the only special tool you will need is a Hole Punch. You will also need:

A Stanley knife or a strong pair of scissors, for cutting tubing;
A hammer, for fixing tubing to walls or fencing;
A bowl of hot water, for softening the ends of tubing, to make inserting connectors easier.

To install the system, first lay the supply tube. Weight it down in places until it looses its kinks, laying it in the sun will help. Use "T" connectors, elbow connectors and straight connectors where required to join up the lengths and create a continuous supply network. If necessary, fix the tubing to the ground with supply tube stakes to stop it moving as you work. Cover or bury it later if you wish.

Seal off the supply tube by using either a "Stop End" or "End Sleeve".

Attach the tube to your threaded outside tap using a threaded tap connector.

Inserting flow control valves into the supply tube, will allow you to shut off parts of the system. This can be useful when parts of your garden or vegetable patch no longer require watering, while others still do.  You can either fit valves in the supply tube using 13mm barbed valves or in the micro tube using 4mm valves

If you will need access to your tap for other uses, use a dual tap connector or a 4-way tap connector , which will allow permanent connection of the automatic watering system as well as ongoing tap access.

Now start to insert the micro tube and outlets (drippers, sprinklers etc).

All you have to do is identify where you want the micro tube to be attached, make a small hole in the supply tube with the special hole punch, and join the micro tube to the supply tube using a micro tube connector. If you make a hole in the wrong place by mistake, don't worry; simply fill it with a special blanking plug "goof plug" and try again elsewhere.

Pierce the supply tube with the pointed end of the hole punch, taking care not to make the hole too large.

Measure and cut a length of micro tubing and push a micro connector into one end. Push the other end of the micro connector into the hole in the supply tube. Fit the outlet to the free end of the micro tubing.
Where you need to water close to the supply tube, you can fit the outlets directly onto the supply tube, by piercing the tube as above, and push-fitting the outlet directly, without using micro tube.

You should keep micro tube to a maximum of 3mtrs from the supply tube to ensure good water flow. You can use micro "T" connectors to join short lengths of micro tube together.

Our special chart will help you to decide which outlets you should use and when. You can fit any combination of outlets. The number of outlets your system will take depends upon the size of the system, how much water flows through your tap and the slope of your garden.

Automating Your System

Having set up your system, you could simply turn on your tap every time you want to water. However, an water control timer will automate your system completely, saving you time and making sure your plants are regularly watered even when you are away!

They also feature a manual over-ride facility and you can now fit a rain sensor to some of our timer to ensure that your system only comes on when it needs to.
